Softly fades the twilight ray
Of the holy Sabbath day;
Gently as life's setting sun,
When the Christian's course is run.
Night her solemn mantle spreads
O'er the earth as daylight fades;
All things tell of calm repose,
At the holy Sabbath's close.
Peace is on the world abroad;
'Tis the holy peace of God,
Symbol of the peace within
When the spirit rests from sin.
Still the Spirit lingers near,
Where the evening worshiper
Seeks communion with the skies,
Pressing onward to the prize.
Saviour, may our Sabbaths be
Days of joy and peace in thee,
Till in heaven our souls repose,
Where the Sabbath ne'er shall close.
by Samuel F. Smith
to the tune, DIJON 7 'German Evening Hymn'
from Great-great-Grandmother's Methodist Episcopal Hymnal

I didn't realize at first that it was a hymn, I thought it was poetry...which of course is sometimes the same thing.
Thanks for sharing.
Ah, may I live here, never striving and only resting. How i long to get there today on this Monday-assault-of-the-schedule-out-of-hands afternoon! Thanks for posting it. I'll read it again right now and breathe in and breathe out and remember that Sabbath is in me. love you.
Dear Melissa,
Thank you for sharing this beautiful hymn! It is wonderful you have your Great-great grandmother's hymnal!
Love, Paula
