This wintry, homebound Monday was just the sort of day I love. I always envision this kind while planning domestic and homeschool routines. Daily duties carrying us forward, “unresting, unhasting”. Washer swishes, dryer hums, dough rises, soup simmers. You get the picture. :)
The household slowly and steadily takes on a weekday rhythm that I’ve missed during the more outward activities of the weekend. The wide world carries on, busy about its work and we are busy about ours, snugged up in this little house on the prairie.
This gentle effort toward order is an important ingredient in our home culture. Not for the sake of shiny spaces or a perfectly checked off to-do list (not here. not yet. ever.). It’s an attempt to provide a pleasant, healthy sort of boundary (of space and time) in which to work and read and learn and serve and pray and live.
Now, the truth is that many days have extra ingredients. You know, places to go, extra people to serve, reasons to hurry, illness, crisis. Threats to peaceful routine. Those days require much grace, and an understanding of God’s loving sovereignty over the details. Surrender. Acceptance. Peace-without-routine. :)
But today, I give thanks for the Monday-at-home mercies around me, and ask for grace to treasure rightly the gift that it is.

What a lovely post...and so true...
love, Tina :)
I'll think of the beautiful way you've written these thoughts as I go about my busy "out of the house" day today, ready to come home and just "be", tomorrow. To let the rhythm slow down and come to it's natural place. Thankyou.
